'WHY' THE MAN BOOK
WHY "The Man Book" There are so many issues facing young black men in American today. It has become so complex that it’s hard to imagine where to start unraveling. Our schools have failed our black and brown children, and the police and justice system is even worst. 71% of young black kids are growing up without two parents in the household, and it’s hard to find a full time job for parents, with a discriminating job market.
As a result, the homicide rate for young black men ages 15-24 is 18 times higher for black men then white, and the unemployment rate for ages 20-24 is twice more than their white peers. Black men are six times more likely to be incarcerated than whites. Black boys are four times more likely to be suspended from school than their white peers.
Jareem Gunter, author of The Man Book, is striving to make efforts to turn this negative situation around and give black and brown boys better chances of success. Through a transformational guide, The Man Bookequips men with thought-provoking, fundamental tools that will empower them to live successfully in today's society, and strive towards excellence in becoming a better man. The Man Book is not just a book, IT’S A MOVEMENT! A movement to help change the lives of our young men.
Part of the puzzle is trying to figure out what happens along the way that creates such disparate outcomes for these young men. Jareem believes that it all starts with the soft skills, those of which a father should teach his son. But if the father is not around, or the father has never been taught himself, how does this affect the child? The pressures to succeed and to be of good character are great- But how does a young man exemplify something he's never been shown?
The Man Book was created to attack the issues young men face head on! Jareem has compiled all the things he feels young men struggle with the most and presents them as the most important areas for growth.
